Cool off this Summer with Ayurveda Tips

With the soaring mercury, summer heat has begun to impact life at large - humans, animals or plants. With change in seasons, there is a change in the body metabolism too which has a deeper impact on the self. And rightly so, Ayurveda’s principles suggest that eating habits and daily routine should flow with the respective seasons, to help us live in harmony with the nature’s cycle.

Enjoy the summer with quick Ayurveda tips:

1. Cut down on spices that give heat: Lesser the consumption of spices like cayenne, garlic, chilies and black pepper the better for you. Adding cooling herbs such as cardamom, fennel and saffron in your cuisine makes a difference.

2. Keep away from greasy and spicy food: They accentuate the heat in your body and make you feel hotter. Foods such as cucumber, squash, broccoli, celery, cilantro, asparagus, okra, cabbage, snow peas are cooling and nutritious.

3. Avoid ice-cold drinks: Cold carbonated drinks, flavored juices and milk-based fruit smoothies disrupt the digestion process and lowers immunity, by creating toxins in the body.

4. Avoid sour fruits: Eating ripe, juicy sweet fruits like apples, mangoes, pears, plums, peaches, apricots, cherries and guava are helpful when consumed within half hour of eating your meal.

5. Drink Fresh coconut water: Tender coconut water is loaded with natural minerals and salts that replenish your body from lost salts. They have a cooling effect to beat the summer heat.

6. Have Fresh lemonade: Fresh lime juice with raw sugar and a pinch of rock salt (saindhav namak) can be very healthy and cooling. Lemonade from stores are better prevented, as they contain artificial colors and preservatives.

7. Avoid direct sun: Avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and excessive activity is important to prevent heat stroke. Any physical fitness activity is best done before the sunrise or around the sun set.

8. Avoid chilled water: Drinking room temperature water with a dash of a sprig of fresh mint or a teaspoon of organic rose water helps. Try drinking from a copper cup/jug, it adds health.

9. Avoid wearing tight fitting synthetic clothes: Wearing loose fitting pastel colored cotton clothes as it breathes and reflects the sunlight keeping the body cool and comfortable.

10. Massage the skin: Massaging with unrefined coconut oil 20 minutes prior to shower in the morning to keep your body and rejuvenated.
