Five Ways to De-Stress Every Day of Your Life

Stress is not alien to anyone, rather it is experienced by everyone across all demographics – age, sex, color, occupation, religion or place. Some manage it and some succumb to it. When you give in to constant stress from various external factors such as commuting in heavy traffic, work overload, unhappy family or bad marriage, it affects your health in no time. It can trigger various health disorders and affect organs like heart (inflammation, high BP), stomach (acidity) and skin too.

However, the solution to fighting stress is identifying your stress warning signs and learning how to better manage stressful situations. Here are five quick tips to deal with stress:

  1. Meditate: This helps to calm your mind and be more focused. Deep breathing exercise (pranayama) is known to reduce heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure. Yoga and prayer can also relax the mind and body to a great extent.
  2. Stay Positive: Stay positive. Find situation that helps you laugh, as laughter has been found to lower stress hormones levels, increase "good" HDL cholesterol and reduce inflammation of the arteries.
  3. Exercise: Staying physically active melts away stress. Be it walking, exercising or playing, your body releases endorphins (mood enhancing hormones). It also lowers your BP, strengthens heart muscle and maintaining a healthy weight.
  4. Stay Active: Simple activities like a warm bath, listening to music, indulging in your favorite hobby, can give you a much-needed break from the stressors in your life.
  5. Unplug: Stress seems to follow you everywhere. Learn to switch off from the stressors. Avoid emails, phone calls and TV news. Find just 10 or 15 minutes every day to escape from the world.
